Well, for those of you who don't know, Chris broke his left wrist 2 1/2 weeks ago. I will spare all of the details, but long story short this is what happened:
On November 13th, he went to the sand dunes in Glamis, California with my brother-in-law, Tim, and Tim's friend Ryan and Ryan's friend Rick. They had been riding their motorbikes for an hour, when it happened. There was a rather steep drop at one location and Chris slowed down, which caused the bike to stall. He was putting in neutral to kick-start the bike again and next thing he knows he is eating sand. Tim was in front, Ryan had gone around him, so no one saw it. But they figure that Rick probably got around 5-8ft of air and came crashing into Chris. We don't know what him, if it was his fore-wheeler, or his body, but his injury was consistent with breaking when he fell. Rick was okay, but his leg was pretty sore and his for-wheeler had some damage. There was no damage to the bike, thank goodness, because it is my dads that he was using while on their mission, so we won't have to pay to get it fixed. We are lucky it was just his wrist. It could have been worse. Chris could be dead, or severely injured his back, spine, you name it.
He went to the ER that night, and they said he needed to see a specialist, so the following Monday, we went to an Orthopedic Surgeon. He said his bone was broken on the joint and was broken in several places. He used the term "shattered" not broken. Yikes. The swelling was so bad that he said he needed surgery before he could cast it. Again, we were sent home and he had to keep it elevated 24/7 and ice every two hours. 10 DAYS after the injury we finally were able to have the surgery. The surgery was this past Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Pins and screws were used, but we don't how many. He still couldn't cast it after the surgery because of the swelling, so again, he was sent home in a splint and has to keep it elevated 24/7. They did, place a cooling pack inside of his splint, that he is able to hook up to a cooling machine, which pumps cool water into the pack inside of his splint. He is doing a lot better between that and the Vicodin every 4 hours.
He goes back to the doctor on Wednesday to get a cast....assuming that the swelling comes down enough to do so. If not, it will be another week in a a splint, so were hoping the swelling comes down so he can get a cast and be able to more.
It has been tough not having help with the kids and tough for him not being able to do a lot of the simple things that we take for granted every day. he has been on the couch every night since the injury. I'm beginning to miss him!!!
I did take a picture of him though. They provided him with a different sling after the surgery, so I'm pretty proud of myself for coming up with this contraption to keep his arm elevated. Another use for a ladder. Who knew!
Until next time.......
